English 17-20 County Champs 2018 – Rosemary Allan
I have just got home from the English 17-20 County Champs 2018. Below is a write up on how it went. I have attached a photo (I am the one in the bright pink Forza top). However it is not very good quality & cannot see the ForzaWM logo on my shirt because of the quality. I’ve asked the other players if they have better photo & will send you one if I receive it.
This weekend, Essex competed in the English 17-20 County Champs 2018. We started in a box of 4 where we faced Kent, Lancashire & Worcestershire.
First up was Worcestershire. I played Amy Steventon & won 21-6, 21-12. Essex beat Worcestershire 5-1 overall.
Next up was Lancashire. I had to play Amy Siu. The last time I had played Amy was in 2011 (when I lost 15-5, 15-4), but managed to win this time, 21-13, 21-9. Essex were 3-1 down when we went into the mixed so we knew we would need to win the next 2 mixed matches, which we did which left us with a 3-3 draw against Lancashire.
Last in the box we had Kent. I had to play Annabel Hong who I beat 21-18, 21-11. Essex beat Kent 5-1 overall. This left us top in our box, which meant we were through to the 1st-4th place play off.
In the semi-final we faced Devon. I played Jessica Hodge & won 21-9, 21-13. Like the Lancashire match, we were 3-1 down when we went into the last 2 mixed matches. We knew if we won these matches, we would go to the final as we had won more sets. We did manage to win the last 2 mixed which meant we had made it to the final!
We were facing Yorkshire in the final (who we had lost to in the final last year), so was determined to get revenge from last year! I had to play Cici Lu, who I had lost to in the final last year. After some long & tiring rallies, I managed to win 21-17, 21-19. I was very pleased with this win as it was the first match Yorkshire had lost all weekend! Unfortunately though, Essex lost to 5-1 to Yorkshire, finishing with a silver medal.
I was pleased to win all 5 matches this weekend without dropping a set & for Essex to go home with a silver medal.
